J. Harvey Young Lecture

Each year the Department invites a distinguished historian to deliver the J. Harvey Young Lecture, which is named for and endowed by the family of one of the great figures in the history of this Department, J. Harvey Young (1915-2006).  Prof. Young came to Emory in 1941 and, except for his military service during World War II, taught here uninterruptedly until his retirement in 1984. Specializing in the history of American medical quackery as well as food and drug regulation, he wrote or edited nine books and more than 140 articles and interview transcripts. He also directed 37 doctoral dissertations.

The lecture commemorating him is typically given by an historian of United States history, often in Prof. Young’s own field of the history of American medicine. A committee is now considering whom to invite for 2007-08.
