Jonathan Prude

Jonathan Prude, Associate Professor, (B.A., Amherst College, 1968; M.A., Harvard University, 1970; Ph.D., 1976); Nineteenth Century American social, labor, and cultural history. Publications include The Coming of Industrial Order: Town and Factory Life in Rural Massachusetts, 1810-1860 (1983; new edition 1999; coeditor (with Steven Hahn), The Countryside in the Age of Capitalist Transformation: Essays in the Social History of Rural America (1985), which received the E. Harold Hugo Book Prize.

I have been drawn in recent years toward the cultural end of my interests, using various articles and review-essays to probe relations between culture and class during the "long" nineteenth century stretching from the founding of the United States to the early 1900s. My current major project is "The Appearance of Class: The Visual Presence of American Working People from the Revolution to World War I."
